Trauma Therapist in the Salt Lake Valley | Lionheart Counseling LLC
Finding the right trauma therapist matters — more than almost any other factor in whether therapy actually helps. If you're in the Salt Lake Valley and looking for someone who specializes in trauma and has the training to back it up, Lionheart Counseling LLC is here.
Dax Johnson, LCMHC provides specialized trauma therapy to adults throughout the Salt Lake Valley — including Murray, Salt Lake City, South Jordan, Sandy, Draper, Midvale, West Jordan, Taylorsville, Herriman, and Cottonwood Heights — through in-person sessions at our Murray office and telehealth available statewide.
What Trauma Actually Looks Like
Trauma doesn't always look like a dramatic crisis. For many adults in the Salt Lake Valley, it's much quieter than that. It might look like:
Flashbacks or intrusive memories that show up uninvited
Being easily triggered by things that seem minor to others
Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected from yourself
Hypervigilance — always bracing for something to go wrong
Difficulty trusting people even when they've given you no reason not to
Negative beliefs about yourself that trace back to something that happened
Self-sabotaging patterns that don't make sense until you understand their root
Physical symptoms — tension, exhaustion, sleep problems — that don't have a clear medical cause
If any of that resonates, trauma therapy may be exactly what you need.
Specialized Trauma Treatment — EMDR and IFS
Not all therapists are trained in evidence-based trauma treatment. At Lionheart Counseling, trauma is a primary specialty — and the approaches used are specifically chosen because of their proven effectiveness:
EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) — one of the most widely researched trauma treatments available, endorsed by the WHO and the American Psychological Association. EMDR helps the brain safely reprocess traumatic memories so they stop feeling like they're happening right now.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) — addresses the parts of you that developed to protect you from trauma — the shutdown response, the hypervigilance, the inner critic that formed to keep you safe. IFS helps these parts heal rather than just manage them.
CBT and Solution-Focused Therapy support the work by addressing the thought patterns trauma creates and keeping the healing moving forward.
