What Trauma Actually Looks Like

‍ ‍

Trauma doesn't always look like a dramatic crisis. For many adults in the Salt Lake Valley, it's much quieter than that. It might look like:

‍ ‍

  • Flashbacks or intrusive memories that show up uninvited

  • Being easily triggered by things that seem minor to others

  • Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected from yourself

  • Hypervigilance — always bracing for something to go wrong

  • Difficulty trusting people even when they've given you no reason not to

  • Negative beliefs about yourself that trace back to something that happened

  • Self-sabotaging patterns that don't make sense until you understand their root

  • Physical symptoms — tension, exhaustion, sleep problems — that don't have a clear medical cause

‍ ‍

If any of that resonates, trauma therapy may be exactly what you need.

‍ ‍

Specialized Trauma Treatment — EMDR and IFS

‍ ‍

Not all therapists are trained in evidence-based trauma treatment. At Lionheart Counseling, trauma is a primary specialty — and the approaches used are specifically chosen because of their proven effectiveness:

‍ ‍

EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) — one of the most widely researched trauma treatments available, endorsed by the WHO and the American Psychological Association. EMDR helps the brain safely reprocess traumatic memories so they stop feeling like they're happening right now.

‍ ‍

Internal Family Systems (IFS) — addresses the parts of you that developed to protect you from trauma — the shutdown response, the hypervigilance, the inner critic that formed to keep you safe. IFS helps these parts heal rather than just manage them.

‍ ‍

CBT and Solution-Focused Therapy support the work by addressing the thought patterns trauma creates and keeping the healing moving forward.

‍ ‍

  • "I've counseled with Dax about several different interpersonal issues. He is very objective and always makes sure to think before he speaks. I would recommend Dax if you need someone who really listens to understand and isn't going to butt in or talk about himself. He has a genuine heart for people and wants to them succeed. If you're ready to dig in and move forward in your life and relationships, Dax is definitely someone you want on your team."

  • "Do yourself a favor and get to know this guy! I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) of 30 years. I’ve known a lot of therapists over the years, I would, and would not, recommend. I am SUPER picky about who I refer people to. Dax is one I highly recommend without reservation. He’s bright, soulful, grounded, compassionate, and passionate! He truly has a lion’s heart. And he has a great story that led him to where he is. He’s a good man doing good work in the world. He’ll take good care of you."
