What If You Could Finally Put the Past Behind You?
You've probably told yourself the same thing a hundred times: "It happened a long time ago. I should be over it by now." But your body didn't get the memo. The memories still show up uninvited. The triggers still catch you off guard. The feelings still hit like it just happened yesterday. Your body goes into full survival mode or just shuts down completely.
That's not weakness. That's what unprocessed trauma does to a nervous system. And it's exactly what EMDR therapy was designed to address.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's one of the most extensively researched and widely recommended treatments for trauma and PTSD in the world — endorsed by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Here's the simple version of how it works: when something traumatic or deeply distressing happens, the brain sometimes doesn't process it the way it does normal memories. Instead, it gets stored in a raw, unprocessed state in your mind and body, which is why it can feel so vivid, so present, and so emotionally charged even years later.
EMDR uses guided bilateral stimulation, typically eye movements, tapping, or tones, to help the brain go back and finish processing those stuck memories. The goal isn't to erase what happened. It's to change the way your brain holds it, so it stops feeling like an open wound and starts feeling like something that happened in the past — not something that's still happening right now.
What EMDR Can Help With
EMDR is most well-known for trauma and PTSD, but it's also been shown to be effective for:
Childhood trauma, abuse, or neglect
Single-incident trauma (accidents, assault, sudden loss)
Complex or ongoing trauma
Anxiety and panic attacks
Negative core beliefs — "I'm not good enough," "I'm not safe," "I'm unlovable"
Grief and traumatic loss
Self-sabotage patterns rooted in painful past experiences
Phobias and overwhelming fears
If you've ever felt stuck in a pattern you can't logic your way out of, EMDR may be able to get to the root of it in a way that talk therapy alone sometimes can't.
What EMDR Sessions Look Like at Lionheart Counseling
EMDR therapy isn't something that gets rushed into. Before any processing begins, we spend time building trust, understanding your history, and making sure you have the coping tools to stay grounded throughout the work. Then, when you're ready, we begin working through targeted memories or beliefs using bilateral stimulation.
Many people are surprised by how calm the process feels — and how much lighter they feel afterward. You're always in control of what we work on and when. If something feels like too much, we slow down. This is your healing, and it happens at your pace.
EMDR is available both in-person at the Murray office and via telehealth throughout Utah.
Who EMDR Is a Good Fit For
EMDR therapy at Lionheart Counseling is a great fit for adults who:
Have experienced trauma — big or small — that still affects them today
Feel stuck in anxiety, depression, or self-destructive patterns they can't break
Carry negative beliefs about themselves that feel completely true, even if they aren’t
Have tried talk therapy and felt like something was still missing
Are ready to go deeper and do the work to actually heal — not just cope
You've Survived It. Now It's Time to Heal From It.
The things that happened to you shaped you. But they don't have to define you. EMDR therapy gives your brain the chance to finally finish what it started, and to store those memories where they belong: in the past. Let’s use your brain to heal your brain.
